2014 Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards Winners!

Frank Apostolopoulos, creative director of Melbourne’s Biba salon group, was last night named the 2014 Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year. Winning the top prize in Australian hairdressing, Frank beat three others to the award and takes the national trophy to Victoria for just the fifth time in 18 years.

Sara Allsop of Auckland’s Dharma, received the coveted accolade of New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year – Sara also took home the award in 2013. Frank & Sara received their trophies at a spectacular gala ceremony in The Star event centre, on Monday night, which was hosted by James Mathison.

With a strong eye for trends, Frank is known for his creativity, versatility and vision. He has a clear prediction for the trends coming through in women’s hairdressing over the next season:

"We’re moving away from undone, beachy-textured styles that have been big for the last few seasons – returning to a stonger, more masculine aesthetic. Colour-wise, we’re going to be seeing more directional monochromatic tones. Gone are the days of balayage and bed hair – women want more structured styles that look effortless and grown-in as soon as they step out of the salon.”

Celebrating their 29th anniversary this year, the annual Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards are the longest running and most respected awards in the Australian and New Zealand hairdressing industry. They set the industry standard in the region and represent the pinnacle of hairdressing excellence in the southern hemisphere.

Winners across all categories include many previous award-winners: Biba Academy taking Education Organisation of the Year – for the second year in a row; Justin Pace, of Papas and Pace, winning Colour Technician of the Year; Jules Tognini of aka Togninis, awarded Men’s Hairdresser of the Year – for the second year in a row; Lisa Muscat, of é Salon, winning New Creative Force – for the second year in a row; Jayne Wild and Gary Latham, of Wild Life Hair salons were inducted into the Hair Expo Hall of Fame for their long commitment to supporting the hairdressing industry. The details of every winner and their salon are listed below.

The awards gala wraps up the 39th year of Hair Expo Australia – the largest hairdressing industry showcase in the southern hemisphere. 10,000+ visitors from around the region flock to Sydney each year to see more than 10,000 square metres of exhibition space, industry innovations and participate in education sessions from the top local and international hairdressing talent. More than 500 cans of hairspray are used on over 2,000 models over the weekend, in shows from international and local hairdressing stars, demonstrating the latest and greatest in the hairdressing world. Over $1.6m is spent on hairdressing supplies over the weekend.
