2015 Hokonui Fashion Design Awards

It was with great pleasure that we were able to attend this year’s Hokonui Fashion Design Awards in Gore. This year marked the 27th anniversary of NZ’s longest running and most successful fashion awards. But sadly one person was missing, the show’s co-ordinator for many years Heather Paterson, who died from cancer in February. With what must have been a stressful time, Heather’s husband Wade Patterson has taken over the reins to ensure that her vision and legacy continue.

Southland’s support for this event has never waived and hundred’s from all over the region, packed the Gore Town & Country Club to celebrate some of the best fashion talent New Zealand has to offer. Over the years the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards have help launch the careers of many young designers and models who have gone on to bigger shows such as New Zealand Fashion Week.

Judges Denise L’Estrange Corbet of WORLD and Dr Margot Barton of the Otago Polytechnic School of Fashion were joined by hairdresser Mike Hamill and Eastern Southland Gallery curator Jim Geddes. Adrian Barclay and the team from Venom in Invercargill took care of  all the backstage hair.

Wade Paterson said both Corbet and Barton had judged at the awards before and the committee was thrilled they were returning. "To my way of thinking WORLD is one of the most recognised brands not only in New Zealand but overseas. Denise just brings the expertise and an absolute passion for our event,” Paterson said.

The inaugural Heather Paterson QSM Memorial Trophy/Best Southland Designer Award went to long time entrant Viv Tamblyn from Gore. Nik Patel of Pukekohe, who took out the overall Bonz Award Of Excellence ($15,000 package) and Fredricks Menswear Award ($1000). Lucy Maw from Dunedin was the winner of the Young Designer Award.
