Barbercraft at Shed 10
Barbers from all over the country came to attend New Zealand’s first Barbering Expo at Shed 10 down on Queens Wharf in Auckland. Very special guests included Tommy J from ‘Hair by Tommy J’ one of Sydney’s most famous barber shops out in Redfern. The opening event on Saturday night featured competition participants, sponsors and VIP media. Erica Cummings from Hito and Julian Maloney from Maloney Barber Shop welcomed the attendees before Tommy J took the stage for a hands on cutting demonstration.
BarberCraft was initiated by the Hair and Beauty Industry Training Organisation, HITO, which is responsible for New Zealand qualifications and apprenticeships in barbering, to celebrate the achievements and progress of barbering around the country. It will highlight the big changes to the industry in recent years – the revolutionised, modern barber shops, and the transformation of more traditional businesses to blend old with new.
On Sunday it was down to business with the best barbers from around New Zealand competing against each other in each of the categories for the coveted prizes that were on hand to be won. The scene was certainly set with a awesome range of food caravans on hand to feed the masses and the team from Hallertau Brewery supplying the liquid refreshments. Throw in a wall of sponsors stands and a couple of Harley Davidson bikes and the vibe was there!
In between the competitions attendees were treated to special guest barber demonstrations including Chris Terry from New City Barbers in Christchurch who revived a modern classic cut using his own unique style. Matt Brown from My Fathers Barber in Riccarton showcased some of the evolving trends in hair art. Tommy J went over a the ins and outs of a Classic Pomp.
